HOW TO SEW: pintucks

Hello Dears!

I recently bought a set of 32 sewing machine presser feet and I've been having fun trying them out! These feet go with my Singer Heavy Duty 4423 sewing machine, but it should also fit other machines with same clip-on foot system. The entire set of 32 feet costs less than 20 USD, which is a great price per foot and a great deal overall. You can find a similar set of 32 pcs of sewing machine feet here.

In today's post, I want to share a technique how to create pintucks using pintucking foot. There are two variations: straight line pintucks (ideal garments) and square pintucks (great for decorative items, such as pillows or bags). Let's take a look how to sew those pintucks!

HOW TO SEW PINTUCKS

To sew standard straight pintucks, you will need a pintucking foot (I used a foot that came in 32 sewing machine feet set) and a twin needle (before using twin needle, check your sewing machine manual, if it's compatible with your machine).

1 step: install pintucking foot to the machine and insert twin needle. Thread the machine.

2 step: on the right side of the fabric, draw straight lines where you want the pintucks to go.

3 step: increase the thread tension on sewing machine and adjust straight stitch length. The higher thread tension and the shorter the stitch - the more expressed the pintucks will be. On my Singer Heavy Duty 4423, I set the thread tension to 9 (max.) and stitch to 2mm length to create these sample pintucks on medium weight cotton fabric.

4 step: start sewing along the lines, using straight stitch. Once finished with first straight line, start sewing second one and then the next one, until all lines are sewn. Gently press the pintucks with an iron.

And that's it - very simple, yet effective technique to sew pintucks!

And here's how the pintucks look like from the wrong side of the fabric:

HOW TO SEW SQUARE PINTUCKS

Sewing square pintucks is similar to regular ones: you will need a pintucking foot (I used a foot that came in 32 sewing machine feet set) and a twin needle (before using twin needle, check your sewing machine manual, if it's compatible with your machine).

1 step: install pintucking foot to the machine and insert twin needle. Thread the machine.

2 step: on the right side of the fabric, draw squared lines where you want the pintucks to go.

4 step: start sewing along the vertical lines, using straight stitch. Once finished with vertical lines, rotate the fabric and continue to sew remaining lines. Once finished, gently press the pintucks with an iron.

The square pintucks are finished! They are so beautiful and can be used a great decorative element.

I hope you enjoyed this simple, yet gorgeous technique on how to sew pintucks!

Wishing you a great weekend,

Julie
