Want to add a playful heart-shaped detail to your skirt? In this tutorial, I want to show you how to sew clean, professional-looking cutouts step by step. Best part is that they are super simple to sew and very beginner friendly! All you need is tear-away stabilizer, zigzag stitch and colorful threads.

This tutorial is created in partnership with Mettler, manufacturer of high quality threads. For my hear cutouts, I used Mettler Seralon Spring kit - the matching pastel colors go so well with this design, giving it a truly sweet heart look!

Get your supplies ready and let's start sewing!

How to sew sweet heart cutouts

Step 1. Draw heart shape on tear away stabilizer, place it on wrong side of the fabric and stitch around with a straight stitch. This will hold stabilizer in shape and also trace heart shape on right fabric side for later step.

Step 2. On your sewing machine, select a very short zigzag stitch. I used 4.5mm width and 0.2mm length zigzag stitch. Note that longer zigzag stitch might leave empty spaces between stitches!

Step 3. For the thread, I’m using Mettler Seralon Spring Kit, where matching pastel colors will beautifully go with my fabric. Mettler Seralon is a universal sewing thread, that works with all types of fabrics and stitches (perfect for zigzag, too!). In this design, I'll use different color thread for each heart, to give it a more playful, sweet look.

Step 4. Using zigzag stitch around the heart shape, making sure the straight stitch seam goes right in the middle. Important here is to stitch with fabric right side up, to get the best zigzag look.

Step 5. After stitching around, cutout the inside of the heart, cutting close to the zigzag, but without actually touching it.
