One thing I truly enjoy are simple, easy-to-sew techniques that add a unique touch to DIY clothes. One of these techniques is lettuce hem: an eye-catchy wavy hem, that reflects the 'waves' of the lettuce. Best part? It's so simple to make and all you need is a zigzag stitch! Add this technique to your DIY blouse sleeves, dress hem or even neckline - the choice is yours!

This tutorial is created in partnership with Mettler - manufacturer of high quality threads. I've been sewing with Mettler threads for years and their quality speaks for itself!
Now let's take a look how to sew a lettuce hem - click below to watch YouTube tutorial (with 3 extra sewing techniques!), click here to see a short video tutorial or scroll for photo tutorial. Enjoy sewing!
HOW TO SEW LETTUCE HEM
Start by cutting sleeve with a bit of a flare at the bottom - this will help stretch the fabric more, giving it more of a 'lettuce' effect.

Fold hem seam allowance towards inside and press.

Select a matching or contrasting color thread. In my blouse, I've chosen a matching color thread Mettler SILK-FINISH COTTON 40. This thread is made from 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton and thanks to its slightly increased thickness, it is perfect for decorative seams. Big plus: these big spools hold 1000m of thread, but still fit into a domestic sewing machine, without any extra spool holders!

Mettler SILK-FINISH COTTON 40 thread 1000m spools come in 2 kit options: PASSIONATE QUILTING and SENSE OF TRADITION. Both kits come in useful storage boxes, as well as beautiful and versatile thread color pallets - these would make a perfect gift for any sewist or quilter.

Once machine is threaded with suitable thread, select a wide, short length zigzag stitch (I used 5mm width and 1mm length zigzag stitch). Place fabric under presser foot and make a few stitches to secure the seam start. Then, stretch the fabric and holding that stretch, sew with a zigzag stitch.

When sewing, position fabric, so that the needle goes along the folded edge when the needle goes down on the right side.

Once you've sewn around the hem, trim excess seam allowance.

Steam the hem and your lettuce hem is finished!
